Last month, BeeLine Reader was featured on The Takeaway With John Hockenberry, which airs on NPR stations around the country. Our interview ended up being one of the show’s most popular segments of 2016, and it drove over 20,000 new visitors to our website.

We expected that a disproportionate percentage of these NPR-sourced visitors would opt in to our philanthropic buy-1-give-5 program, which benefits students in low-income schools. But we were shocked to see how big the difference was, especially since we’ve been previously covered by news outlets with affluent audiences (The Atlantic) and audiences that care about education (EdSurge) — and we’ve never seen anything like this.

Typically, we see about 5% of our subscribers opt in to our buy-1-give-5 program. In the week following our NPR interview, over 30% of new subscribers opted in, meaning that scores of children in low-income schools can now get free access to a literacy tool that’s proven to help kids learn how to read, and which is especially useful for early ESL students, and students with dyslexia or attention deficits.

This response is a testament to NPR listeners, who — even after all those telethons — are still willing to give a little extra to give a hand to students in need. NPR has created an incredible community, and we are grateful to have had the privilege to meet them!
